Be honest: Have you taken perfect care of your skin this summer? With so many fun outdoor activities crammed into the season, you may have forgotten to put on a sun-shielding hat or missed the sunscreen during an afternoon by the pool.

Now, with fall and colder temperatures approaching, it’s the perfect time to put the focus back on your skin. If you’re looking for sun damage solutions, come see the team at Qvita Health & Wellness. Our CEO and leader, Panagiota (Peggy) Demetriou, ARNP, FNP-BC, is proud to offer a wide-range of cosmetic services.

To lessen sun damage and give your skin an overall refreshed look, we’ll work with you to create a custom treatment plan that will have you and your skin feeling reinvigorated. Often, we recommend a chemical peel. Here’s how it works.

What is a chemical peel?

On the most basic level, a chemical peel is a procedure that uses a chemical solution, usually with an acid base, to remove the top layers of the skin. The reaction of the solution and your skin has an exfoliating effect and the targeted layers of skin will eventually peel away — hence the name chemical peel. The skin below the chemically peeled skin doesn’t have any of the dry, dull debris found in the top layers of the skin — it’s softer and smoother.

Levels of chemical peel

Not all chemicals peels are the same — different chemical peels treat different issues. There are light, medium, and deep chemical peels. As you might expect, deeper treatments can treat more permanent imperfections, like scars, than superficial treatments. Deep peels are more intense and have longer recovery periods.

Treatment areas and issues

Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck, or hands. Although many different issues can be targeted, most treatments focus on one of the following:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Scars
  • Melasma
  • Uneven skin tone or redness

Medium-level peels typically work best for sun-damaged skin.
