If you took a quick look into your makeup bag, would mascara be there? Odds are that answer is yes, considering that 65% of women use mascara to make their eyelashes look longer and fuller. In 2018, beauty companies sold $8.1 billion in mascara alone. However, if you don’t use mascara, maybe it’s because you’re part of the growing group of women who use false lashes — a market that is projected to have a value of over $1.8 billion by 2024.

If the numbers above tell you anything, it’s that women care a lot about the way their eyelashes look. And for women with thinning eyelashes, mascara and false lashes are especially important. But what if there was a way to have thicker lashes naturally? Latisse can help.

At Qvita Health & Wellness, we’ll work with you to see if Latisse can help you achieve the results you want. Panagiota (Peggy) Demetriou, ARNP, FNP-BC, and the rest of our team are proud to offer a wide range of cosmetic services that give you a vibrant, youthful look. Below, learn more about how Latisse can give you the full, thick eyelashes you’ve been hoping for.

On eyelashes

Your eyelashes have been with you for a long time. Your first set developed while you were still in the womb, typically between weeks 22 and 26 of pregnancy.

Eyelashes serve two main purposes. On one hand, they keep irritants and particles like dust, sand, pollen, dirt, and other harmful debris out of your eyes. They also let you know when something is too close to your eyes or poses a threat, much like whiskers on a cat or dog.

On thinning lashes

Eyelashes may thin for a variety of reasons. Some are totally in your control while others aren’t quite as preventable. Potential causes include:

  • Wear-and-tear
  • Excessive rubbing or tugging
  • Poor makeup habits
  • Sleeping in mascara
  • Using old mascara
  • Medical conditions and infections (pink eye, hormone imbalance, vitamin deficiency)

Aging can affect your eyelashes in two ways: First, the older you get, the less hair you grow. Second, hormonal changes associated with age can lead to a decrease in hair production.

What is Latisse?

Latisse, medically known as bimatoprost, is an FDA-approved, prescription-strength treatment for thin eyelashes. Like many of science’s best breakthroughs, Latisse is actually the by-product of a medication originally created to treat glaucoma. It works by lengthening the period during which hair grows while also increasing the number of hairs produced.

How to use Latisse

You use Latisse every night after you remove all of your makeup. You apply the serum along the lash line of the upper eyelid — never to the eye itself or the lower eyelid. Blinking and other natural eye movements will spread the medication to your lower eyelid. You should also remove your contacts before application. Side effects are typically mild and include itchy red eyes, dry eyes, and darkening around the eyelid.

Results

Most people start to see thicker, darker, and longer lashes about two months after they start using Latisse. A recent study found that Latisse patients experienced impressive results, including:

  • Eyelash length increase of 25 percent
  • Thickness and fullness increase of 106 percent
  • Eyelash darkness increase of 18 percent

Results should last for as long as you use Latisse.
